Physical walk cancelled so do NEW virtual walk instead!

Friday 13 March 2020 in News from the Cancer Centre

Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation regrets to advise it has decided to cancel the planned physical Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer on 29 March.

The outbreak of coronavirus has caused some challenges, and due to the risk posed by being in large crowds, it is a necessary precaution to ensure that you, as well as our staff, patients and families, are not put at risk. The health and safety of our patients, families and staff is our number one priority.

We do have some good news however, which is that we will be going ahead with a Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson Virtual Walk Challenge instead!

What is a virtual walk you might ask? The virtual walk is an opportunity for you to take part in your own walk, in your own time and at your own preferred location. We encourage you to continue fundraising and raising awareness and share your experience on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the #BobsWalk4Kids and @westmeadkidsDownload your virtual walk flyer here.

The Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer is the highlight of the calendar for the Cancer Centre for Children – not only because it raises vital funds, but also because it brings together families and staff for a wonderful day out that is fun and rewarding. Although we can’t bring you all together physically this year, we hope that the ‘virtual community’ we will be creating will be an equally fantastic experience.

We are still accepting registrations for our new Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson’s Virtual Walk until 5pm Friday 27 March 2020. You will have until Thursday 30 April to complete your virtual walk challenge and fundraise for the Cancer Center for Children.

To register for the Virtual Walk or for more questions and information, please contact Event Manager, Nicole Ilacqua.

See a message from Dr Luciano Dalla-Pozza about the new virtual walk.

FAQ’s

Why is the event cancelled?

You would have seen in the news recently that there has been an outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus). This has caused some challenges for us and due to the risk posed by being in large crowds, has sadly meant that we have made the difficult decision to cancel 2020 Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer.

We looked at the possibility of holding a pared back event, but we simply couldn’t find a way to deliver it well and still do justice to our amazing walkers, who work so hard to raise funds and make the event so successful.

Can the event be postponed to later in the year?

Given the evolving nature of COVID-19, it is not possible to postpone the event. The health and safety of our patients, families and staff is our number one priority and after close consultation with health experts, this was determined to be the best decision for everyone involved.
