Radiothon sails beyond target

Thursday 24 October 2019 in Supporter thanks

The whirlwind of excitment that Radiothon brought to Westmead on Friday 18 October, as Hollywood glitz and glamour ruled the day, ended with celebratory cheers.  7NEWS and smoothfm captured the moment when donations for the Hospital's biggest fundraising event of the year sailed beyond its $4 million target to reach a breathtaking $4, 042, 920.

Every donation made in the 24 hours that Radiothon lit up the Hospital, beginning on Thursday at 6.00pm, was doubled by generous matchers including biosland, DOOLEYS, EVENT Hospitality & Entertainment, Kids with Cancer Foundation, Yieldbroker and Robert and Libby Albert.

Donations made during Radiothon will buy life-saving equipment, help conduct vital research and improve treatments for sick children so it was important to raise awareness of the event in the weeks leading up to it.

Two families from the Cancer Centre for Children were interviewed by 7NEWS and shared their experiences prior to the big day.

Sarah Hazelton spoke about her daughter, Makenzie, who spent her 6th birthday in hospital because of a tumour in her stomach, and Tamara Miles, whose son was previously a patient, showed how she organised the painting of the Bandaged Bear statues she created that were given to donors as a thank you.

Getting a glimpse into the lives of families whose world has been upturned due to cancer provides insight into how donations help.

Thank you to the generous donors, volunteers, community and staff for making Radiothon a tremendous success and helping sick children.
