Go gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Wednesday 2 September 2020 in News from the Cancer Centre

September is awash with brilliant gold, the signature colour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, as communities worldwide honour children and families affected by cancer.

The colour gold signifies how precious and beautiful children are, and the Cancer Centre for Children has adorned its ceiling with a sea of golden yellow flags to celebrate this important month.

Raising awareness of childhood cancer can promote increased support and create change. Over 800 children, aged up to 14 years old, are newly diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia, and over 300,000 children and teenagers worldwide. Community support is vital in funding scientific research that is essential in achieving progress towards a cure.

Dr Luciano Dalla-Pozza, Director of the Cancer Centre for Children, links raising awareness to progress against cancer.

“It is all about shining a spotlight on this devastating disease this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“Our clinicians and researchers share a common goal to improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes with deeper understanding supporting further success. At the Cancer Centre for Children, our aim is to cure every child with cancer.”

Our families can join us in going gold in September. On visiting the oncology Treatment Centre you are invited to add a message to a gold tree, created for this special month, that is blooming across a wall, and children can help celebrate with a variety of gold themed art and craft as we support strengthening community awareness of childhood cancer.

Raise awareness to make a difference

Would you like to raise awareness of childhood cancer? Try these ideas or use an imaginative idea of your own:

  • Wear gold, or decorate in gold, to encourage conversations about childhood cancer with family, friends and colleagues
  • Share social media posts about childhood cancer to raise awareness. The Children’s Cancer Research Unit, the research arm of the Cancer Centre for Children, is posting under Kid’s Research on Twitter this month to raise awareness. See them in their gold, glittery hats and retweet their content.
  • Spread the word in a fundraising event
