Chase celebrates in the 'Tug' walk

Saturday 4 May 2019 in Patient stories

When four-year-old Chase's stomach became bloated his family thought he had been given extra treats but after a few weeks when it hadn't gone down his mother, Kelly Green, took him to the doctor. What followed shocked them as the seemingly insignificant problem turned out to much worse than they had thought.

In March 2018, Chase was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumour, a rare kidney cancer that can occur in one or both kidneys that primarily affects young children. Chase's family was devasted by this news. His nine-year-old sister, Kyndra, and father, Russell, were bowled over as it was completely unexpected.

Kelly said:

Being told that your child has cancer is absolutely heartbreaking. You feel a range of emotions; from sadness to fear. It’s a fear of the unknown, then anger takes over, how could this happen to a child, to our child and eventually you come to a stage of acceptance and come together as a family to be the best possible support for Chase.

What followed was a series of treatments that Chase endured, that sometimes brought tears to his eyes, but were effective in treating the cancer. During the next year Chase had surgery to remove his left kidney, 16 cycles of Chemotherapy and 25 blood transfusions in the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children's Hospital at westmead.

To celebrate the improvement in Chase's health, and thank the organisation that helped him, his family put on their jogging shoes and entered the 27km Bob 'Tug' Wilson Walk for Kids with Cancer on Sunday 24 March, 2019. Chase and his sister, Kendra, went in the new one kilometre family-friendly walk near the finish line in Manly. The money they raised under the banner of 'Team Chase', in honour of their son, will help other families affected by childhood cancer.

Chase can now celebrate his newfound energy and have fun with his supportive family.
