Bryson's Playground Dream

Monday 26 August 2019 in Patient stories

Bryson began to lose weight and feel lethargic three years ago and then his family’s worst fear came true when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Always happy, and with boundless energy, Bryson began to change a few months before his third birthday when he became increasingly tired and was not able to eat enough food to counteract his continued weight loss.

On the advice of their doctor the Miles family took their son to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for further testing. During these tests an MRI scan showed a tumour the size of a tennis ball on Bryson’s brain.

Bryson’s mother Tamara said their family were shattered.

"I remember putting my head to his and willing the tumour to come into my own head because I was bigger and could handle it."

He was only a little boy at that time… he was not meant to be dealing with this.

The next day Bryson had surgery to remove the tumour, followed by months of chemotherapy, and a number of other procedures.

It has been a long journey, but now Bryson is cancer free, his energy has begun to return, and he is looking forward to being able to run around a playground with his friends.

The Miles family supported The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in the recent RunWest charity event to raise awareness and funds. They said:

The hospital has made a massive impact on Byson’s life, it saved him.

“Without the wonderful teams we had on our side we may not have been here talking about this right now. It could have been a totally different outcome.”

Today, Bryson’s infectious grin extends from ear to ear and lights up the room. "He's a very big character," says Tamara. "He walks into a room, and everybody just loves him." It's been a tough journey for Bryson but he continues to get better and feel stronger.  As his energy returns, it won't be long before running around the park will feel like more of an everyday thing rather than something special.
