Bob 'Tug' Wilson's Walk: Entries are open!

Tuesday 12 November 2019 in News from the Cancer Centre

Pull on your walking shoes and join the Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson Walk for Kids with Cancer on Sunday 29 March 2020 to help raise vital funds for the Cancer Centre for Children. Entries are officially open and there are walking and donation options to suit everyone from casual strollers, and families with children, to people inspired by a challenge. The annual walk is in its twelfth year and is hoping to raise $400,000 which goes directly to helping children in the Oncology Ward.

Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson

When Bob ‘Tug’ Wilson, after an eventful life in the Navy, was diagnosed with terminal cancer he wanted to help children with the illness saying, “I have lived a good life, theirs is just beginning”.

The first walk to raise money, in 2008, was an epic one featuring a long trek from Coolongatta, in Queensland, all the way down to Canberra. Bob passed away just three weeks before this inaugural walk began but his wife, Carol Wilson, has ensured his legacy continues with smaller walks everyone can do and the event has become increasingly popular.

Over an eleven-year period the walk has raised over $1 million, with all funds donated to the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Three great walks

Walkers limbering up to test their endurance in 2020 will be able to choose from a few options. There is the original 27km walk beginning at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, with stunning harbour views albeit challenges such as stairs and hills, finishing at Manly at the Novotel.

This challenging but rewarding walk usually takes over five hours to complete but there is a new 13km walk, ending at Balmoral Park, where buses will be located to take people to the finish line of the longer event so they can celebrate with friends.

Kids can join in, as well, in the 1km family friendly walk along the Manly Corso which takes place over flat ground and finishes at the Manly Novotel.

Virtual Walk Challenge: Do it your way

If you want to walk in your own time, in your own environment, the Virtual Walk Challenge is for you. The Virtual Walk lets you choose from the Balmoral Blazer 50,000, Spit Bridge Strider 75,000 or Manly Master 100,000 step challenge and is perfect for school, community and work groups.
