Amira rings the bell

Friday 27 December 2019 in Patient stories

Amira was supported by a crowd of close family and friends as she rang the brass bell in the Oncology clinic on Monday 16 December.

Almost two years ago, when she was five-years-old, Amira wasn’t well.

“She seemed fine, but was very pale,” said her mother, Jawad Al. She was diagnosed with leukaemia, affecting her white blood cells, and was treated at the Cancer Centre for Children.

Today, after ringing the bell to celebrate the end of her treatment Amira covered her ears at the loud clanging and smiled as everyone clapped.

“You ring the bell too,” said Jawad Al to Dr Luce Dalla-Pozza who had helped Amira during her treatment. At the end of the ceremony Dr Dalla-Pozza rang the bell, as well, by popular demand. After all, there was a lot to celebrate.
